 Some people arrive carrying burdens no one can see. The woman walked through our doors like so many others. She found a seat, ordered a drink, and spent time in the café. To most people, she was simply another guest enjoying a cup of coffee. What they didn't know was that she was preparing for one of the biggest transitions of her life.
At the time, she was a resident of Life House Women's Shelter. "Nobody knew her situation. Nobody knew her struggles," recalled Janelle Miskelly, Housing Case Manager at Life House. "Nobody looked down on her. She was just welcomed with open arms." When Janelle shared that story with us, it stayed with us. Because in many ways, it reflects something we've always believed at Techno Café: every person deserves a place where they can simply be seen as a person. For the past five years, Life House Women's Shelter has provided exactly that for women experiencing homelessness in York County. "We exist to provide help and hope for women who are experiencing homelessness," Janelle shared. "We provide shelter, warm meals, access to showers and laundry, fellowship, and case management for our ladies." Founded to fill a critical gap in services for women experiencing homelessness, Life House has become much more than a shelter. It has become a place where women can find stability, support, and the opportunity to begin again. Every day, Janelle walks alongside women as they work toward permanent housing, employment, and independence. "Our ladies have gone through the program, attended their case management meetings, worked on their budgets, secured employment, and done everything that has been requested of them to be successful," she said. "One of the coolest things is being able to see these ladies, after they've done all of this hard work, walk into a new phase of life where they're able to be successful." Success stories often begin with practical support. Housing. Employment. Transportation. A warm meal. But Janelle believes something else matters just as much. Being seen. "Each of our ladies is an individual who really wants to be seen as a person," she said. "They all have a uniqueness inside of them, but also a desire to be seen and loved." It's a simple idea, but one that can change everything. Many women arrive at Life House carrying more than a lack of housing. They often carry years of disappointment, rejection, trauma, or circumstances that have left them feeling invisible. Sometimes what helps people move forward isn't just a resource. Sometimes it's belonging. Sometimes it's a conversation. Sometimes it's someone remembering their name. Sometimes it's sitting in a coffee shop where no one sees homelessness before they see humanity. That is why, during our recent One Year Celebration, we felt honored to recognize Life House Women's Shelter as one of four local nonprofits making an incredible impact in our community. Not because the work is easy. But because every day they choose to show up for women who need hope. "The more people who see and love them, the more people who are willing to extend a helping hand, the further they'll go in life," Janelle said. Like many nonprofits, Life House faces ongoing challenges. Women often arrive with few personal belongings. Transportation remains a significant need. Resources are constantly required to meet both immediate and long-term goals. Yet despite those challenges, Janelle remains hopeful. "There are so many barriers that we face, yet time and time again we have people who show up out of nowhere to fill those needs," she said. "Whether it's transportation, a meal they drop off, or somebody saying, 'I just want to come sit with your ladies,' people continue to step up. That's what gives me hope." Maybe that's what community really is. Not grand gestures. Not perfect solutions. Just people continuing to show up for one another.
